The 5s is a methodology of Japanese origin which aims to maintain a
workplace organized, clean and safe. 5S is considered as key in the
implementation of Lean Manufacturing ("lean production"). It is a
management model focused on giving maximum value to customers, using the
minimum resources needed (lean).
Productivity decreases with a dirty or disorganized workplace or in a
place where the working tools cannot be found.
5S uses a list of five Japanese words beginning with the letter "S":
- Seiri: Sorting
- Seiton: Setting in order
- Seiso: Shining
- Seiketsu: Standardizing.
- Shitsuke: Sustaining.
